Smart devices for digital diabetes therapy

Smart insulin pen

Smart insulin pens help diabetics simplify their daily diabetes therapy and avoid mistakes. They have integrated electronics and can record the applied insulin dose and transmit it wirelessly to a smartphone. This allows the patient to digitally record and improve his therapy.
As part of a research cooperation with the Leipzig-based medical technology company diafyt Medtech, smart insulin pens are being developed and tested at the institute. In combination with a smartphone app for calculating the insulin dose for type 1 diabetics, the patient's therapy can be significantly relieved. The insulin pen has a bluetooth interface for data exchange and can also monitor the insulin temperature.

Sensors for glucose measurement

The disease diabetes is a great burden in the daily life of patients. According to current therapy methods, diabetics are dependent on checking their blood glucose several times a day. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are a great aid to control and are widely used. They are attached to the patient's skin and measure the sugar concentration in the subcutaneous fat tissue with a thin sensor needle.
As part of a research cooperation with the Leipzig-based medical technology company diafyt Medtech and the Institute of Applied Physics at TU Dresden, new types of biopatches are being developed at the institute to detect various biomarkers. These biopatches have sensors based on organic semiconductors and can be produced cost-effectively in a printing process.
